Wah On Pawnshop

The staff of Wah On Pawnshop, Grandpa Poon

Standing at the street corner of South Wall Road, you can see a red sign with a gold border displaying the character “押” (pawn), resembling an upside-down bat holding a coin, symbolizing good fortune. Established in 1951, “Wah On Pawnshop” is one of the few remaining four floor high traditional pawnshops in Kowloon City. It features a classic design with a single-side arcade and three storage floors above. Upon entering, a large wooden panel shields the interior, ensuring the privacy of the clients. Behind the approximately six-foot counter, there is a staff responsible for appraisal and valuation, affectionately known as “Second Uncle.” Once the price is agreed upon, cash payment can be made immediately, offering a convenient and swift transaction.

Grandpa Poon is a 83 years old staff, has been working at Wah On Pawnshop since its opening. Regarding the types of items pawned, he mentions that gold, diamonds, and watches are the main items nowadays. In the past, people pawned anything they had due to poverty and limited space. During summer, the pawnshop served as a storage warehouse, with the second floor filled with quilts. Pawnshops are an ancient industry, and despite the availability of instant loan services today, they have not been phased out by the changing times.
