The red-white wooden shop sign framed in green catches the eye from far away. Its raggedness tells the history of Kwong Shing Shoes. Founded over 60 years ago, the business is now run by the founder’s daughter. She inherits not only the under-stairs shop on Lok Shan Road, but also the craftsmanship and equipment. The handwritten shop sign, feather sewing machine, wooden compartment shoe tacks container, the eight wooden strips used as gate to fit in with the tenement house staircase, everything is in a rather worn-out condition, even the fixing tools handmade by the founder.
The shop opens from 3:30pm to 6pm everyday. The business hours are not on display, but most patrons are local residents who frequently come by for a chit-chat so they are well aware of the time.
