Kowloon City is the ethnic enclave of not only Thai, but also Teochew. After World War II, there was a significant emigration of Teochew to Hong Kong. They clustered in the neighbourhood of Nga Tsin Wai Road and made a living by running Teochew grocery stores nearby. Chiu Fat Rice and Grocery offering a wide array of Teochew pastries and cooking ingredients is one of them. Teochew pastry plays a key role in festive celebrations, as different combinations symbolise auspicious meaning of different kinds. The shop also sells long grain indica rice by catty, rather than in packs like chain supermarkets, so as to meet the local resident’s needs.
