The yellowed shop sign, green-and-white tile flooring exude the nostalgic charm of New Cheung Yick Bakery Shop, which has been offering quality homemade Chinese pastries for nearly 40 years.
Master Lo, the patissier cum owner, was born in Mainland China. Under the referral by his relatives, he worked as an apprentice of Chinese pastries in the famous Golden Gate Restaurant in early years. After completing his apprenticeship, he and his fellow worker, Master Leung, were headhunted by the Golden Gate owner’s younger brother to work in his new shop named “New Cheung Yick” in Mongkok. Two years later, they acquired the ownership when their boss resigned. Subject to urban renewal, they relocated to Pak Tai Street in To Kwa Wan and moved to the current location in Hung Hom for a higher footfall in 1991.
The signature red bean roll, originated in Macau, is a must-try. Lo learnt it from his Macau-born master. This flaky pastry is highly acclaimed by the local residents.
