Back in the 80s, my parents liked to take us to Hung Hom Square during holidays. The entire top floor was occupied by New Star Restaurant, in which the gigantic water wheel installation was the symbol. Dim sum trolleys bustled around and there used to be a specific room for customers to dial the telephone.
After the closure of New Star, the top floor was partly renovated into a food court where nowadays sits Tao Heung Restaurant, and partly turned into retail space for lease. I still remember on the food court’s opening day, it was massively advertised in the newspaper and shops celebrated with promotional giveaways of soft drinks, popcorn and balloons. Our family enjoyed a happy weekend there. Small as it is, Hung Hom Square provided everything necessary. It gathered PARKnSHOP supermarket, Gold Silver Island gift shop, cinema, auction house, retailers of electronic appliances, snacks, books, CDs and toys under one roof.
Hung Hom Square left me with happy childhood memories that I will never forget.
